NIJ Urges Students On Online Journalism

Nigerian Institute of Journalism has directed students in final year classes, especially those in National Diploma 2 whose projects on Newspaper and Magazine publication are Expected soon, to produce online publication instead of the printed publication.

One of the senior lecturers of the school, Mr. Oribamise Oluwafemi, disclosed the information to the students on Tuesday, 6th, October 2020 while engaging the students in moral discussion after the day's examination.

He added that the new idea was to minimize the cost of production and to also stick to the directive of the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, who said all activities in all higher institutions of learning should be done online at this period of COVID-19.

"So, you should all take the practical of Newspaper and Magazine seriously as it is as important as the theory class," he said.

Another lecturer from the school, Mr. Tolu Ojemuyiwa, said all news stories should be written from all economic and social ramifications. Be it politics, health, education, business, and other human endeavors.

He added that students should assign themselves to beats through groupings and not practice plagiarism in their news stories.

"I wish you well in your forthcoming examinations. May you all be successful in the end," he said.

This initiative will also add to the reputation of the school at the sight of the National Board for Technical Education, (NBTE), which is a body that dictates what and how a polytechnic or monotechnic should be run.

According to the record, the board sent some delegates to investigate the practical and teaching facilities of the school on Monday, 13th May 2019 where they used three consecutive days to do that as they left on Wednesday 15th May 2019.

During the visiting, a lecturer, Mr. Cami Ezenwa, told our reporter that the Nigerian Institute of Journalism had been accredited for a long time before now. One of the rules of the NBTE, however, is to revisit any standard polytechnic or monotechnic every five years to check if the institute is still maintaining its standards.

"The visiting is to inspect the radio studio; the television studio; the computer laboratory; the editorial suites and some other valuable amenities that a monotechnic needs to keep its accreditation as a standard one," he said.
