FG Finds Itself In Tribulation As Nigerians Support Lad Who Kicks Against Reopening Of International Airports Before Tertiary Institutions
Nigerians have reacted to the gestures of Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, for not mentioning the specific date for reopening of tertiary institutions during the NTA program on Nigeria Policy Brief on Education and Covid-19, on Saturday 22nd of August 2020, but assuring Nigerian students that tertiary institutions nationwide will re-open soon.
The minister was invited to give an update on the students' faith over the reopening of tertiary institutions amid COVID-19 a day after a presidential aspirant for 2023, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, urged the federal government to reopen tertiary institutions before the opening of international airports across the country.
Nwajiuba reiterated at the live program that he would gather the situation report from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other regulatory bodies of various tertiary institutions and present to the presidential task force (PTF) for crucial opinion.
He said he had received calls from tertiary institution Rectors, Vice-Chancellor, Provosts, especially those from private institutions, that all the necessary measures to curb the deadly disease have been put in place and that they were ready to receive students.
“Tertiary institutions across the country will re-open soon. private universities have written us requesting that they are allowed to reopen ahead of public institutions. Vice-chancellors have also requested that we allow them to reopen for their students in exit clauses.
“We have also a lot of calls from the bodies who want us to resolve the industrial actions embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) before reopening because some public schools which are not ASUU-prone to take the advantage of the strike to move ahead, but that would destroy our public schools. So we are working on all these calls," he said.
Itknews.com arranged an online opinion box where public opinions on the matter were sought. The total number of Nigerians that wanted schools to reopen was 2017 out of 2026 voters.
A student of Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Utsu Christiana, said tertiary institutions should be opened as she felt that markets and religious centers have opened, adding that students and staff would be more cautious than people in the market and worship centers.
"My school has really tried for providing online lectures for its students but as a final year student, meeting my colleagues before graduating would return the-lost-schooling life back in me," she said.

The residents of Agboyi Kingdom, a small community in Kosefe Local Government Area, have been in the news for the wrong reasons. This is as a result of the call on the government to come to their aid by the communities that makes up the kingdom.
The community due to lack of drinkable water and other basic social amenities for decent living has to go across the river on a daily basis to buy drinkable water. According to a source (anonymous) reveal that the river is their toilets and sock-a -ways and most of the people, if not all of uses the water daily for domestic purposes ,for a community so close to civilization.
Suffice it to say that it is very sad to know that while a large inhabitants of the Community live in abject poverty and are lamenting the sorry state of their environment, a very few unscrupulous powerful individuals are exploiting the situation and smiling to the bank.
The beneficiaries of the environmental degradation of the community, made sure no meaningful development is brought to the community by the government. This category of people according to a resident named Mr Taju Mathew says that " the Baale's of Agboyi Community and some elders does not want any form of development to come to the community especially the construction of a bridge across the river because of the money they make ferrying commuters across the river".
It was discovered that every effort made by the government through the community representatives and some elders to construct a bridge across the river was repeatedly thwarted by the Baale and some members of his cabinet because of the money they make ferrying commuters across the river.
According to Mr Kingsley Mwadimuya, another resident of the community, " the community has turned into a big ghetto, where youth smoke Indian hemp, rape women and dump their bodies into the river".
Agboyi Community is made up off three autonomous villages headed by three Baale's.
Chief Fatai Bankole (Agboyi 1), Chief Taiwo Lamina (Agboyi 2), in Agboyi 3 the Baale's stool remains vacant due to the tossle over the Baaleship.
For over 4 years the community has been without a king. Just last week a new king was installed in the person of, His Royal Magesty Olayaluwa Oba (Engr) Monsuru Abimbola Adekanmi Oladega ( Akinmasa 1)Olu of Agboyi kingdom. They had four kings in succession before the present King.
The Chairman of Alapere/ Ketu LGA, Hon. Dele Oshinowo said, " the community need a minimum of 2 bridges , maximum of 4 . Each to link Ogudu, Alapere, Ajelojo church Street in mile 12, and the last to link Ikorodu axis. This is the story of Agboyi the forgotten kingdom.
